This bundle gives insights into amazing contributions women have made and could be used to support Gatsby Benchmarks 3 and 4, Women’s History Month. It includes:
Women in Stem, which is a complete lesson and includes a preliminary quiz, which is then discussed as part of the lesson.
The Curie Women - the legacy of Marie Curie and her daughters
NASA Women - individual slides could be used as starters in Maths or Science lessons
Formidable Female Composers - this includes links to the music of the women mentioned and could work as a complete lesson or using individual slides and the relevant links as starters to inspire and support GB 3 and 4.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin - the breakthrough astronomer - this presentation could be used to support GB 3 and 4 in encouraging students to see the value in determination and what a woman can achieve despite the obstacles in her way
Sofonisba Anguissola - an introduction to a woman who made her own career in a time where court artists were predominantly men. This could support art and design with GB 3 and 4.
Students will be thinking about going off to uni/apprenticeships and this presentation discusses big and little issues they may encounter and how to deal with them. It approaches the idea of preparing for challenges and thinking about how to cope, while also exploring the fact that it is natural to have different reactions and that seeking help is a strength. The Teaching Notes include a link to a preliminary quiz on Forms to duplicate and this will get students in the frame of mind to think about the topic. The presentation is wholly adaptable and works as a complete lesson or could be broken up into 5-10 minute sections for tutor time.

Osteoporosis Week comes at the beginning of June, but this could be part of PHSE at any juncture. The lesson discusses what the condition is and how it can affect the body, but also looks at preventative members and poses the question of why young people should be thinking of this/be aware now. In many ways it contributes to supporting a healthy diet and exercise regime, also highlighting the contributing factors of alcohol and smoking, eating disorders and steroid tablets. There is a quiz on Forms to introduce students to thinking about the topic and the link to duplicate is in the Teaching Notes.

This presentation discusses the issues around Hate Crime and Disability, looking at what constitutes a disability and providing discussion points to consider various aspects of the question, including the question of advocacy and how to report or support someone experiencing such crimes. This lesson includes a presentation, discussion sheet and teaching notes with a link to a brief preliminary quiz on Forms. There are a range of discussion points to support understanding of what transgender and respect mean and looking at the wider context of hate crime.
This lesson is designed to raise awareness around the issues of hate crime on a basis of sexual orientation and gives opportunities to discuss why crimes may go unreported and what is being done to increase understanding around hate crime and reporting. This resource is designed to coincide with World Rivers Day in September, but in recognition that this is a busy time of year could fit in with other parts of your Careers/PSHE programme. It deals with looking at careers and job sectors based around rivers and opening students up to the idea of considering their work environment and that jobs they may have considered can be applied in multiple settings. It includes teaching notes with a link to duplicate a short preliminary survey on Forms, a printable bingo card to link to the presentation on jobs and job sectors and a printable Exit Ticket to check understanding.
This presentation could be used to promote women in science/STEM, accompany work on the composition of stars or generally inspire and demonstrate what women can achieve. It could contribute to Gatsby Benchmark 4. It is a brief introduction to the career of Cecilia Payne, who made some of the most fundamental discoveries regarding stars, including that their composition was predominantly Hydrogen, very much against the popular belief of the day that stars had a similar composition to the Earth.

This resource is designed to coincide with Smile Day on 6 October, but could be adapted to fit in elsewhere in your sixth form programme. It would very much complement our Is Kindness the New Superpower lesson. The lesson includes opportunities to discuss the power of a smile and the personal right to smile or not, as well as introducing the notion of the positive aspects of acts of kindness.
